With 35 years of experience in the TV and film industry, Roland is a renowned British sculptor and prop maker. His impressive credits include The Fifth Element, Gladiator and Gladiator 2, Narnia, and Terminator: Dark Fate. Alongside his film work, Roland takes on private commissions and shares his expertise through teaching. His workshops are a true treasure trove of sculpting knowledge and creative insight, making this masterclass a unique opportunity to learn directly from his wealth of experience.

Course Overview

During this one-day intensive, you will create both a one-piece mould and a two-piece mould in plaster. Roland will guide you through every stage of the process, from preparation and measuring, to mixing plaster correctly, through to refining and finishing moulds for practical use.

By the end of the day, you will leave with:

  • A completed plaster one-piece mould
  • A completed plaster two-piece mould
  • A strong foundation in mould-making techniques
  • The confidence to apply these skills to your own studio practice.

Workshop Schedule

10:00 - 12:30
Welcome & Introduction

  • Overview of mould-making in ceramics and sculpture
  • Tools, materials, and plaster safety

One-Piece Plaster Mould

  • Selecting and preparing your object
  • Building containment walls and sealing the base
  • Mixing plaster to the correct ratio and consistency
  • Pouring techniques to avoid air bubbles and weak spots
  • Demoulding and refining for a professional finish

12:30 – 1pm
Lunch Break
(Please bring your own lunch. A small kitchen area is available at the studio. Alternatively, there is a Sainsbury’s nearby and a range of takeaway shops on London Road. Tea, coffee, and biscuits will be available throughout the day.)

Two-Piece Plaster Mould
